- About Gisaeng
The meaning of gisaeng is the generic term of ye ginseng such as wan gisaeng, min gisaeng, pharmacy gisaeng, sangbang gisaeng, etc., whose job was to entertain people at ju yeon sok or party with song and dance.

From Joseon Dynasty era when the gisaeng system kicked into high gear, gisaengs became gwan gisaeng. Seoul gisaeng belonged to Jangagwon and local gisaeng belonged to the educational institute of gybing. They started to receive the training for hane ei, poem, calligraphic works, dancing, singing, etc. in addition to the basic gisaeng skills to entertain high ranked officers or confucian scholars when they were about 12 years old.
Therefore, gisaeng was classified into the first group, the second group and the third group depending on the cultural ability and singing and dancing skills. The first group belonged mainly to the royal family or the public offices to live a life of professional entertainers as singing and dancing at a national event or party.
Those historically renowned top-notch gisaengs, known as master gisaengs, will be introduced in various stories of k-Haeohwa.

A life of gisaengs might appear gorgeous; however, they were forced to live a life of gisaeng as one of the lowest class citizen for their entire life without being able to choose their fate at the time. Their life was a sorrowful life that they were born as a flower but died with tears.
